Seven minutes after the halftime, Wijnaldum gave the Netherlands a merited lead, scoring clinically with his left foot after Bushchan could only touch a cross into his path.

After Ukraine rallied from a two-goal deficit, Denzel Dumfrie is scored his first international goal late in the second half to give the Netherlands a dramatic 3-2 victory in their Euro 2020 opening.

With a run of first-half saves, Ukraine goalkeeper Georgi Bushchan tormented the Oranje, but his error allowed captain Georginio Wijnaldum to open the scoring early in the second half.

In the Group C battle at the Johan Cruijff ArenA on Sunday, Wout Weghorst added a second soon after, but Andriy Yarmolenko’s magnificent finish 15 minutes from time gave Ukraine hope.

Wijnaldum shot over the crossbar as he surged into the penalty box at full gallop before Ukraine’s Oleksandr Zubkov was injured barely 13 minutes in, with Marlos replacing him.

Yarmolenko was denied a penalty after he felt Patrick van Aanholt had subverted him as he rushed into the Netherlands box, but no contact was made.

The Dutch continued to press, but a misjudged Bushchan produced a spectacular reaction save to keep away Wijnaldum’s deflected volley, and unguarded wing-back Dumfries amazingly headed over from only six yards out with the best chance of an open first half.
