US called for UN Security Council Summit over Russia threats. The United States President Joe Biden has called for a UN Security Council meeting on Monday to address Russia’s “threatened behavior” toward Ukraine, as described by his administration.
“More than 100,000 Russian troops are deployed on the Ukrainian border, and Russia is participating in additional destabilizing measures aimed at Ukraine, posing a clear threat to world peace and security, as well as the UN Charter,” said Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the United States’ UN representative.
Following Mr. Biden’s Thursday phone call with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky, French President Emmanuel Macron will call Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday to evaluate whether Moscow wants “consultations or confrontation” over the escalating issue.
The incident occurred as tensions between Russia and Ukraine rise ahead of what the West perceives as a push by Russia to take over more of Ukraine.
Even as President Vladimir Putin and his administration have stated that they have no aspirations to take over Ukraine, Russia has placed tens of thousands of troops around the Ukrainian border.
